Utility: why your grenades get wasted and the four to learn first

Buying utility and throwing it are different things. Most players do the first and fumble the second. A small set of grenades, learned properly, changes more rounds than better aim.

The problem

You buy a full set of grenades every round and end most rounds with two of them still in your inventory, or thrown in the general direction of the enemy without a plan. When you do throw a smoke it lands somewhere near the right place, blocks half the angle, and the other half kills you.

Utility in CS2 is not an extra. On a full buy you are spending a meaningful share of your money on grenades, and every unused one is money and time thrown away. More importantly, the right grenade at the right moment removes an enemy from the round without a duel. That is a fight you win without having to aim.

Why it matters

Rounds are decided by who has to take the bad fights. Utility is how you make the enemy take them. A smoke turns a three-angle entry into a one-angle entry. A flash makes the holder blind for the exact second you swing. A molotov moves someone off a position you did not want to clear.

The players who complain that their team never has utility are usually the ones with three grenades in their pocket at the end of the round. Learning a handful of throws makes you the player everyone wants on their team, and it does not need aim.

What to do

  1. Pick two maps and learn four smokes on each. Not forty lineups. The four that matter on the sites you play most, for the side you play most. Learn them on an empty server until you can throw them from memory. A smoke that lands correctly every time is worth more than twenty you half-remember.
  2. Learn one flash for yourself and one for a teammate on each site. A pop flash you throw and swing behind is the most direct trade in the game: their vision for your peek. A flash for a teammate entering is how you get kills without being in the fight.
  3. Use molotovs to clear positions, not to farm damage. The molotov's job is to make a spot unholdable for a few seconds. Throw it on the position you do not want to clear by hand, then move while it burns. Throwing it into a smoke at random is a wasted grenade.
  4. Throw utility before the fight, not during it. By the time you are exchanging bullets it is too late. The smoke goes down as you approach the site. The flash goes over as your teammate is about to peek. Plan it on the walk.
  5. Say what you are throwing. "Smoking connector. Flashing for you, go." A silent smoke helps nobody. A called smoke changes what four other people do next.
  6. Spend ten minutes before ranked on your lineups. Same server, same four smokes, same two flashes. This is the fastest warm-up in the game, and it is the one most players skip.
  7. Check your inventory in your demos. Every round you died with utility unused, ask what it was for. The answer is usually nothing. Next time, throw it for something.

A player with average aim and reliable utility wins more rounds than a player with great aim and none. The grenades are the cheap part of the game to learn, and almost nobody learns them.

Own your destiny.
