Counter-strafing: stop before you shoot
Bullets fired while moving go where they like. Learning to stop instantly, and to shoot the instant you stop, is the mechanic underneath every other CS2 mechanic.

The problem
You peek an angle, see the enemy, fire five shots and none of them land. You were moving. In CS2 your shots are only accurate when you are close to standing still, and letting go of a movement key takes longer to bring you to a stop than most people think. Those five bullets went roughly nowhere.
Counter-strafing is the fix. As you release the key you were holding, tap the opposite key for a moment. Your velocity drops to near zero almost instantly, your accuracy returns, and the shot you fire at that moment goes where the crosshair is. Every high-level player does this on every peek without thinking about it. Most players below that have heard of it and do it inconsistently, which is nearly the same as not doing it.
Why it matters
Everything else you learn in CS2 is built on top of this. Crosshair placement does not help if you are moving when you click. A perfect pre-aim on a corner is wasted if you slide through it. Spray control starts from the first bullet, and the first bullet only counts if you were still.
The gap between "sometimes" and "always" is bigger than it sounds. If you counter-strafe on eight peeks out of ten, the two you miss are usually the important ones, because pressure is when habits fall apart. The goal is not to know how to counter-strafe. It is to be unable to peek without doing it.
What to do
- Learn the rhythm on an empty server. Hold D, tap A, fire. Hold A, tap D, fire. Do it in front of a wall and watch the bullet holes. Moving shots scatter, stopped shots group. Ten minutes of this teaches your hands more than an hour of reading.
- Shoot on the tap, not after it. The most common mistake is stopping, pausing, then firing. The stop and the shot should feel like one motion. Aim to fire the instant your velocity dies, which with practice is a fraction of a second after the tap.
- Use it on every peek, not just when you see someone. Peek the angle, counter-strafe as your crosshair arrives on the corner, then decide whether to shoot. If you only stop when you spot an enemy, you are already late.
- Deathmatch with this as the only job. One session where the score does not matter. The rule is that you are not allowed to fire while moving. You will lose fights for the first twenty minutes. Then it starts to click.
- Watch your own deaths for movement. In demo review, pause on the moment you fired in a lost duel. If you were still moving, that duel was a counter-strafe miss, not an aim miss. Sort your deaths into those two buckets for a few matches. The first bucket is the easy one to empty.
- Combine it with a jiggle. Once stopping is automatic, strafe out, counter-strafe, shoot, strafe back. That is the basic jiggle peek, and it is built entirely on this one skill.
Give it three weeks of deliberate attention. After that it stops being a technique and becomes just how you move.
Own your destiny.
