How do you set up a site in Rainbow Six Siege ranked

A strong site setup makes the attackers spend time and utility before they can fight for the plant.

You set up a site by deciding where attackers want to plant, then building the defence around delaying that route. Reinforce the walls that protect the plant denial, make rotates that let defenders move safely, and place utility where it buys time instead of where it looks tidy.

Most weak setups are not weak because one wall was wrong. They are weak because nobody knew what the setup was meant to defend. In Rainbow Six Siege ranked, prep phase is short, attackers bring several kinds of pressure, and one missing rotate can trap five defenders in separate rooms. The goal is a coherent site that makes the attack work for every metre.

What is the first question in site setup?

The first question is: where is the plant most likely to happen? Once you know that, every reinforcement, rotate, shield, camera, trap, and denial tool has a reason.

On many sites, attackers want the safest default plant behind cover, near an opened wall, or under protection from vertical pressure. Your setup should ask how you stop that. Can you deny the wall? Can you contest the doorway? Can a defender play safely near the plant sound? Can a teammate swing if the planter is forced off?

This is why copying random setups often fails. A rotate that works for one plan may expose the anchor in another. A reinforcement that protects a power position may block the only line a teammate needs for plant denial. If your stack cannot explain the setup in one sentence, it is probably too decorative.

A useful setup sentence sounds like this:

"We are protecting default plant, delaying breach, and keeping one safe rotate between site and the off-site player."

That sentence gives players jobs. It also makes review easier after the round because you can judge whether the setup served the idea.

Which walls should you reinforce first?

Reinforce the walls that keep attackers from creating direct plant pressure too early. External walls, hatch routes, and lines onto the default plant spot usually matter before comfort walls inside the site.

There are exceptions, but keep the priority practical:

  • Protect the plant denial position.
  • Protect the wall or hatch that attackers need for entry.
  • Keep defenders from being split into isolated boxes.
  • Avoid closing a line your own team needs.

For example, if a wall gives attackers a free view of the default plant spot once opened, it needs a plan. That plan might be reinforcement plus denial, reinforcement plus a tricking position, or a deliberate choice to give the wall but hold from deeper crossfires. What you cannot do is ignore it, then complain when the plant goes down with 45 seconds left.

Soarne’s /library/utility-that-actually-gets-used guide is not Siege-specific, but the principle applies cleanly: utility should change what the enemy can do, not just sit in the round.

How many rotates does a ranked site need?

A ranked site needs enough rotates for defenders to support each other without gifting attackers a free walk into every room. Usually that means one clear route between the two bomb rooms, plus a planned route to any extended hold or off-site position.

Rotates are not decorations. They answer movement problems. If an anchor cannot leave a pressured room without crossing an attacker-held doorway, a rotate may be needed. If a roamer has to return late through a predictable choke, a rotate or escape path may keep the round alive. If a rotate exposes the planter to defender pressure, it has value.

Bad rotates create new problems. A rotate that lets attackers see deep into site from the breach can harm the defence. A rotate that everyone forgets to hold becomes a late-round doorway for the other team. Before making one, ask who uses it, when they use it, and who watches it if attackers take the adjacent room.

Where should shields, traps, and cameras go?

Place defender utility where it forces attackers to spend something before they can take useful space. A shield should contest a doorway, protect a power position, or delay a plant route. A trap should punish a predictable entry or flank clear. A camera should show information defenders can act on.

The common error is placing utility where it survives, not where it matters. A camera hidden deep in site may live all round and still tell you nothing until too late. A trap far from the execute may catch a careless player once, but it does not slow the main hit. A shield in a corner with no crossfire becomes a grenade tax at best.

Think in pairs. A trap is stronger if someone can swing on the sound. A camera is stronger if a player is assigned to respond. A shield is stronger if a teammate covers the angle that clears it. The setup should create linked problems for attackers, not five separate gadgets.

Clear communication is part of that link. If the off-site player sees the first attacker drone and says only "they are here", the site gains little. If they call "two Bakery side, no breach pressure yet, I am falling in ten", anchors know whether to stay patient. /library/comms-under-pressure helps with that kind of useful restraint.

How do you avoid a setup that wastes the whole prep phase?

Give each defender a prep job before the round starts. Ranked teams lose huge value when four players reinforce the same area while nobody makes the rotate, places denial, or sets flank information.

A simple defender split is enough:

  • One player handles key reinforcements.
  • One player makes rotates and head holes if the lineup needs them.
  • One player places plant denial or wall denial.
  • One player builds the extended hold.
  • One player sets cameras, traps, or flank information.

The exact roles change by operator and site, but the habit matters. Prep should end with players in positions, not sprinting through site with gadgets still in hand.

What should you review after the site collapses?

When a site fails, do not start with "our aim was bad". Start with the first attacker action that became easy. Did the wall open with no contest? Did vertical pressure force anchors out immediately? Did the plant spot have no denial left? Did a rotate help attackers more than defenders?

Then connect the setup to the fight. If an anchor dies alone behind a shield, was there a crossfire? If a roamer falls back too late, did the setup give them a safe route? If the planter sticks the defuser, who was meant to stop that sound cue?
