How do CS2 CTs retake a site without feeding kills?
A clean CT retake starts when the team stops arriving one by one and rebuilds a fight around time, utility and trades.
CS2 CTs retake a site without feeding kills by waiting for the group, clearing one layer at a time, and using utility to force the attackers out of comfortable post-plant spots. The fastest retake is often the one that pauses for two seconds so three players can fight together instead of gifting three separate duels.
What makes a retake turn into feeding?
A retake becomes feeding when each CT acts on their own timing. One player jumps through market window on Mirage B because they are first there. Another swings short three seconds later. The last player comes through door with no flash and no trade. The Ts do not need a strong post-plant. They only need to shoot the fights in the order you present them.
The first retake decision is whether you have enough time and players to group. If you do, group. If you do not, someone must make a deliberate pressure play while the rest trade it. What fails is half the team saving mentally while one player tries to be the hero.
Where should the first CT stop?
The first CT at the retake edge should stop where they can hold space without committing the full retake. On Inferno B, that might be CT spawn or coffins edge. On Mirage A, it might be jungle or CT ramp. On Nuke lower, it might be double doors or decon. The point is to create a staging line where the team can catch up.
From that line, gather information without giving away a rifle. Jiggle a smoke edge. Listen for reloads, scoped weapons and plant position. Ask where your teammates are coming from.
How do you clear the site without checking everything twice?
Clear in layers, not in panic. Every site has a first layer, a plant layer and an exit layer. On Mirage A from CT and jungle, the first layer is ticket, default and close triple. The plant layer is firebox, under balcony and site. The exit layer is ramp and palace. If two CTs both stare at default while nobody looks under balcony, the retake is already disorganised.
Agree the first two clears before swinging:
- "I clear close right, you clear default."
- "Flash over, I swing coffins, you watch new box."
- "I tap bomb, you hold banana."
- "I am clearing hut, wait for me before lower door."
The exact words matter less than the split of attention. A retake dies when four crosshairs cover the same obvious angle and the hidden player gets two free kills. The angle clearing guide explains the habit in more detail.
When should you use retake utility?
Use retake utility to change a fight, not to decorate the site. A smoke on the bomb can force the attackers to move or spam. A flash over coffins lets two CTs enter B together. A molotov at default on Mirage A can stop a close post-plant player from hiding through the first swing.
Retake utility has to arrive before the bodies. If the first CT has already died, the perfect flash thrown two seconds later is late. If you are the second player in, your grenade is often more valuable than your first bullet. Throw it, call it, then swing with the teammate who can use it.
Good retake utility choices include:
- Smoke the bomb when the defuse can be threatened. A smoke with no kit, no teammate and no time is only cover for confusion.
- Flash the common rifle angle, not your teammate's back. Say the flash, wait half a beat, then enter.
- Molotov the spot that stops the defuse. Banana, ramp, palace, dark and default are all examples depending on the site.
- Save one grenade for the second fight. Many post-plants survive the first clear and win when the CTs have nothing left.
The utility guide is useful because most failed retakes include unused grenades or grenades thrown after the fight has already ended.
How close should CTs stand to trade?
Close enough to punish the kill, far enough not to die to the same spray. That is the retake spacing rule. If two CTs enter Inferno B shoulder to shoulder, one flash blinds both and one spray can damage both. If they enter five seconds apart, neither can trade. The useful spacing is usually one doorway or one angle apart.
On Mirage B, a market player and short player can retake together without standing on top of each other. Market clears bench and van pressure. Short fights site and default. If the short player dies, market has a trade angle. On Ancient A, donut and CT can pressure different sides of default. On Nuke lower, decon and double doors can split attention so the planter cannot hold both.
Trading is not revenge. It is timing. If you wait to confirm your teammate is dead before moving, the attacker has already reset their crosshair. Move on contact.
When do you tap the bomb?
Tap the bomb when it creates a decision the attackers hate. If the T is hidden ramp on Mirage A, a tap can pull them into the open. If they are close site and already fighting you, tapping may only take your gun out. If the bomb is planted for banana on Inferno B and you have no smoke, tapping from the open is rarely pressure. It is an invitation.
A strong tap has support. One CT taps, another holds the likely swing, and a third clears the close threat. If the attacker peeks the tap, they meet a rifle. If they hide, the defuse starts to matter.
Do not fake every time. Players learn the rhythm. Sometimes stick the defuse through the smoke because the attacker expects the fake. Sometimes tap and instantly swing because they always spam. The choice should come from the plant position, time left and where the last sound came from.
What should you review after failed retakes?
After a failed retake, do not start with "we missed shots". Start with the order. Who arrived first? Did they wait? What utility was left? Which angle killed the first CT, and was anyone ready to trade it? How much time was on the bomb when the first real swing happened?
If the first death happened before the group formed, the problem was patience or staging. If the first death happened during the clear with no trade possible, the problem was spacing. If everyone survived until the tap but nobody held the swing, the problem was defuse pressure. Those are coachable issues.
The comms guide helps retakes because the calls must be tiny and timed. For broader map-specific improvement, use the CS2 hub. A good retake is not a rush back into site. It is a short rebuild of the round, with every CT arriving as part of the same fight.
