Caffeine: what it does to your aim and how to use it without the crash
Caffeine sharpens attention and, past a point, shakes your hand. Where the line is, when to take it, and why the energy drink at seven is costing you tomorrow's session.

The problem
You crack an energy drink before every session because it makes you feel switched on. Then your hand has a slight tremor in the clutch, you are still wired at midnight, and tomorrow you need two to feel the same. The drink that was a boost is now the baseline, and the baseline is worse than where you started.
Caffeine is a real performance tool. It improves alertness and reaction time in moderate amounts. It also increases hand tremor at higher doses, raises heart rate at the exact moment you are trying to calm down, and stays in your system long after the session ends, which is how it takes tomorrow's sleep with it.
Why it matters
Fine motor control is the thing aim depends on, and it is the first thing too much caffeine degrades. A small amount can make your flicks slightly faster. A large amount makes them jittery. Most players who drink a lot are past the point where it helps and do not know it, because the alertness feels like sharpness.
The sleep cost is the bigger one. Caffeine has a long half-life, roughly five hours for many people, so a large dose in the evening is still active well into the night. Worse sleep means worse reaction time the next day, which means more caffeine, and the loop closes. A player in that loop is paying for every session with the next one.
What to do
- Decide what caffeine is for. Alertness on a session you would otherwise be flat for. Not routine, not hydration, not a ritual. If you are having it every time regardless of how you feel, you are not using it, it is using you.
- Use a small dose, early. A cup of coffee or a small energy drink, thirty to sixty minutes before the session. That is the range where it sharpens without shaking. Doubling it does not double the effect. It adds tremor and nerves.
- Cut it off by mid-afternoon on days you want to sleep well. For most people that means nothing with caffeine in it after about two or three in the afternoon. If your sessions are late evening, caffeine is a daytime tool, not a pre-match one.
- Never stack it on nerves. If you already get shaky in clutches, caffeine makes it worse, because it produces the same physical response your stress does. On match days that matter, take less, not more.
- Reset if you are dependent. If you need it to feel normal, taper it over a week or two. The first few days are dull. After that you get your natural alertness back and a small dose starts working again.
- Watch the sugar separately. Most energy drinks combine caffeine with a large sugar hit, and the sugar crash arrives about the time the caffeine peaks. If you want the caffeine, take it in a form without the sugar.
A small amount, at the right time, on the days you need it. Anything beyond that is trading tomorrow for a feeling tonight.
Own your destiny.
