Who should enter a Valorant site first in ranked games?

The first player into a Valorant site is not always the duelist, but someone must own the first contact.

The player who should enter a Valorant site first is the player whose kit and position can break the first layer of defence while staying tradeable. In ranked that is often a duelist, but Valorant site entry roles are jobs in the round, not labels on the agent select screen.

If your Jett waits behind the spike, your Sova walks in first, and your controller is still lining up a smoke, the team has assigned roles by accident. The defender does not care which agent was meant to go first. They care who crossed the choke, who could trade, and whether any ability made the fight harder for them.

Soarne's angle is practical: the role exists to turn first contact into space. Someone opens the door, someone protects the opener, someone carries the spike into the space, and someone holds the route defenders will use to punish the plant.

What is the entry actually responsible for?

The entry's first responsibility is not getting a kill. It is forcing the defence to react in a way the team can punish. A traded death that gives site control can still be a good entry. A first player who waits and leaves the team stuck outside has not done the job.

The entry needs three things before moving:

  1. A first angle to fight or cross.
  2. Utility that removes at least one other threat.
  3. A teammate close enough to trade the first duel.

Without those three, the entry becomes a donation. With them, even a lost duel can move the round forward.

This is why clearing angles one at a time matters. The first player cannot clear the whole site at once. They need to know which position is theirs and which positions the team has removed, flashed, smoked or assigned to the next player.

What should the second player do?

The second player is the trade, not the spectator. Their job is to enter close enough behind the first player that a defender cannot shoot, reset and disappear. In Valorant, this often means following a dash, satchel, flash or drone with real movement instead of standing at the choke to watch the ability happen.

The second player should usually look at a different angle from the entry. If the entry is crossing towards default on Ascent A, the second player might clear close left or generator. If both players stare at the same smoke, the defender in Hell or dice gets a free fight.

Good second-player habits:

  • Start moving before the entry duel is decided.
  • Keep the crosshair on the next tradeable threat.
  • Call whether the entry crossed, died or forced a defender back.
  • Avoid blocking the spike carrier in the choke.

The second player turns the entry from a solo duel into a team action. Many ranked teams call "go in" as if the first player can create space while everyone else keeps a perfect survival record.

Where does the initiator fit?

The initiator should make the first step less blind. A drone, dog, eye, knife, reveal or flash should identify a close defender, force utility out, or let the entry ignore one angle. The worst initiator timing is using the ability after contact, because the fight that needed help is gone.

On Haven C, a drone that clears close right and logs before the entry crosses changes the hit. The entry can focus deeper. The second player can prepare to trade back site.

On Split B, a flash or stun through main can give the entry the half-second needed to cross into site. But if the initiator waits to see whether the entry commits, the defender holding from back site gets a clean shot first. Support utility has to be tied to the entry's movement, not the scoreboard after contact.

For more on short, useful calls around this, read comms under pressure. "Dog close, follow it" or "flashing back site, swing" is enough. Long explanations slow the hit.

Who should carry the spike?

The spike carrier should usually not be the first player through the choke. They need to arrive close enough to plant when space is taken, but not so early that one lost opening duel drops the spike in the worst place on the map.

In ranked, this is a common leak. The controller takes spike by habit, stops to smoke, and arrives late. Or the duelist takes spike, dashes in, dies, and leaves it under Heaven. Neither version is a role plan.

The spike carrier's job is to shadow the second wave. They should know the plant spot, what utility protects it, and which teammate is covering the retake lane. If the plant cannot happen after the first two fights, the entry did not create the right space, or the spike was too far away to use it.

What does each role do in a simple hit?

Take a Pearl B hit as a simple example. The details shift by composition, but the job list is stable:

  • Duelist: crosses first and forces back site or default contact.
  • Initiator: clears close or flashes the first fight.
  • Controller: blocks the defender lane that would create too many angles.
  • Spike carrier: follows the second wave and plants in the agreed spot.
  • Lurk or late player: holds the push or joins before the team runs out of bodies.

That last role is often misunderstood. A lurk who never affects the round is not creating pressure. They are absent. If the hit is committed, the late player must either catch a rotation, stop a flank, or arrive in time to help the post-plant.

The Valorant hub describes the game as precise gunplay layered with agent abilities. Entry roles are where that layer becomes obvious. The gunfight is still real, but the role structure decides whether the gunfight is fair.

How do you fix roles in solo queue?

You do not need a speech. You need one clear sentence before the round: "I can flash you through main, Raze go first, I trade, Sage bring spike." That is enough structure for a ranked hit.

If nobody answers, still define your own job. If you are the duelist, say when you will enter and ask for one piece of support. If you are the initiator, attach your utility to the first player who is actually moving. If you are the controller, smoke when the team can use the smoke, not when freeze time ends in your head.

Review one attacking half and mark each failed hit by role:

  • No first player.
  • No trade.
  • No support utility.
  • Spike too early or too late.
  • Late player absent from the result.

Patterns show up quickly. If the team often has no first player, your improvement target is commitment and timing. If the first player dies alone, it is trade spacing. If the spike never gets planted after kills, it is second-wave movement.

Valorant site entry roles are not about blaming the duelist. They are about making the first five seconds of contact clear enough that every player knows what the round needs from them.

How should you time utility before a Valorant hit?

The best ability in a Valorant hit is the one that changes the fight while your entry is actually taking it.
